    INF Agreement Collapses, Putin Sends Warning to Trump

    Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a warning to the President of the United States (US) Donald Trump. Putin said Russia would develop land-based short and medium-range nuclear missiles if the US did the same.

    The warning was given by Putin after the collapse of the Intermediate Distance Nuclear Force (INF) agreement. The agreement, signed in 1987, collapsed after the US accused Russia of developing a banned missile type, a charge denied by Moscow.

    Putin on Monday ordered the ministry of defense and foreign affairs as well as Russia's foreign intelligence service, SVR, to closely monitor every step taken by the US to develop, produce or deploy missiles that are prohibited under the treaty that has expired.

    "If Russia gets reliable information that the United States has finished developing this system and starts producing it, Russia will have no choice but to engage in full-scale efforts to develop the same missile," Putin said in a statement quoted by Reuters on Tuesday. (6/8/2019).

    Putin issued his warning after holding a meeting with the Russian Security Council to discuss the US move, which Moscow had been doing for months. Putin warned that doing so would damage the main pillars of international arms control.

    Putin said Russia's Russian air and sea missile arsenal of work would be combined to develop well-placed hypersonic missiles to offset the threat posed by the US for now.

    But he said it was important for Moscow and Washington, the world's biggest nuclear power, to continue arms control negotiations to prevent an out of control arms race.

    "To avoid chaos without rules, restrictions or laws, we need to once again consider all the harmful consequences and launch a serious and meaningful dialogue that is free of any ambiguity," Putin said.

    Earlier US officials said the country was only a few months away from the first test flight of a medium-range missile that would serve as a counter for Russia. While its spread will take many more years.

    Officials from the administration of President Donald Trump, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Russia had deployed many cruise missile battalions throughout Russia that violated the deadly INF pact, including in western Russia, with the ability to attack critical European targets.

    The INF agreement prohibits land missiles with a range between 310 and 3,400 miles (500-5,500 km), reducing the ability of the two countries to launch nuclear attacks in a short period of time.

    Russia has denied the allegations that the missiles it placed were in accordance with the agreement. Moscow also rejected US requests to destroy the new missile, Novator 9M729, known as SSC-8 by the Western NATO military alliance. { Source }
