Fast & Furious Presents Film Review: Hobbs & Shaw
After about 18 years on the big screen with approximately 8 films, the Fast and The Furious franchise finally broke the egg by making a spin-off. Entitled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw or Hobbs & Shaw, this film does not feature the main character of the series, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), but focuses more on the adventures of Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw.
Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, appeared for the first time at Fast Five, a DSS agent, aka an agent working for the United States Department of Foreign Affairs. Meanwhile, Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham, is a killer of the UKSF. Initially, Shaw was introduced as one of the enemies who tried to revenge Dom after he harmed and made Elder Deckard, Owen, into a coma in Fast & Furious 6. In the seventh franchise, he blew up Dom's old house in Los Angeles. Hobbs then catches Deckard and puts him in jail. In The Fate of the Furious, Shaw was recruited by Mr. Nobody, but he later betrayed and instead united with Dom.

In Hobbs & Shaw, Luke and Deckard are united for a mission, which is looking for a very dangerous virus. If the virus spreads, then the population around the world can be threatened. The virus was initially under the supervision of MI6. However, the group carrying the virus was attacked by a group from Eton, a mysterious laboratory. The attack was led by a half cyborg man named Brixton (Idris Elba). Panic with the attack, one of MI6's agents, Hattie Shaw — Deckard's sister — put the virus into his body. He then went to escape.
In Los Angeles, Luke was met by a CIA agent, Locke (Ryan Reynolds), who sent Luke on a mission to get the virus back to London. In London, he will be paired with other people. In London, Deckard encountered agent Loeb (Rob Delaney) who asked Deckard to be involved in the mission. When Luke arrived in London and met Deckard, they were at loggerheads. However, they couldn't help but work together. Deckard must get the virus back to save the world and his sister. Whereas, for Luke, the operation didn't work easily. He must return to his past to save the world and also Hattie.
Directed by David Leitch who is already known as one of the directors who is good at concocting action films (John Wick & Deadpool 2), Hobbs & Shaw does present a very exciting spectacle of action. The action of chasing a McLaren with a number of motorbikes on the crowded streets of London. Not only have to race against other cars that are milling about, but they also have to face a lot of level buses that are still one of London's special features. Not only that, but one-on-one action is also an interesting spectacle. Scenes like this seem to have become Leitch's specialty for action genre films like this.
However, if you are looking for stories, not much is offered here. As has become the hallmark of The Fast and the Furious franchise, family stories are also inseparable from Hobbs & Shaw. The focus on the strength of family ties to deal with any problem has been seen since the beginning of the film began.

Apart from that, the bromance between Dwayne and Jason was completely invisible. Both are only seen as two alpha males who don't want to succumb to each other because their egos are so big. No wonder this makes the film even seem like a movie that is too much talk. Almost in every scene, there is always a very long talk from the cast. The film also runs very flat. Almost no very emotional scenes in this film even though the story can be made more dramatic and emotional. The humor expressed by Hobbs and Shaw seemed cheesy and ordinary. Instead, you will be made excited by the presence of Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart who came in here.
Hobbs & Shaw is a 2-hour 16-minute film full of memorable and exciting action scenes while entertaining, but there is no explosion of emotions in it.
