    First Since 2015, Canelo Alvarez Didn't Fight on Mexican Independence Day

    Canelo Alvarez's third-class boxing world champion canceled plans for the September 14 fight after failing to get an opponent. This is the first time since 2015, Canelo did not appear in the ring at the Mexican Independence Day Weekend.

    Alvarez announced his decision through a press release from Golden Boy Promotions. Canelo and Golden Boy made a strategic decision to delay their annual fight in their home country, Mexico.

    "The decision was made in an effort to secure the right opponent and to carry out justice at the level of promotion needed for big boxing stars," the press release said.

    "As a Mexican, it is the responsibility and honor to represent my country in May and September," Alvarez said in a statement released by Golden Boy Promotions.

    "As a world champion, I am responsible for presenting interesting and competitive battles as possible. That's why the Golden Boy and my team decided to postpone the date for the good of my fans by proposing the most interesting fight and the best opponent."

    The 28-year-old Guadalajara boxer last boxed in May with an absolute win against Daniel Jacobs. Canelo is reportedly discussing a title defense fight against light heavyweight boxer Sergey Kovalev.

    "I told Canelo I wanted to fight Sergey," said Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva to BoxingScene.com. "We will see what happens. We have no control over this."

    Canelo also targeted the trilogy against former middle-class champion Gennady Golovkin whom he defeated last year in 12 rounds in Las Vegas. { Source }
