    Witnessed by Jong-un, North Korea Tests New Rocket System

    North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, oversaw the first shooting of a new type of large-caliber double-launch rocket system. As soon as the report was revealed by the North Korean media on Thursday (1/8/2019).

    "The trial verified the combat effectiveness of the entire system, and Kim Jong-un predicted that it would be inevitable pressure for the troops to become the main target of weapons," the KINA news agency reported.

                   Witnessed by Kim Jong-un, North Korea verified the effectiveness of the new rocket system.

    "The rocket system will play a major role in ground military operations," the report continued as quoted by Reuters.

    The report came a day after the South Korean military said North Korea fired at least two missiles from its east coast into the sea.

    Wednesday's launch came from the Wonsan area on the east coast of North Korea, where the same missile launch last week, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement.

    JCS later said North Korea had fired ballistic missiles that flew about 250 km.

    Britain, Germany, and France have asked the UN Security Council to meet privately on Thursday regarding North Korea's latest missile launch, diplomats said.

    The UN Security Council resolution banned North Korea's launch of ballistic missiles, and the shootout was carried out when American and South Korean diplomats pressed the country to abandon nuclear weapons and its ballistic missile program.

    Pyongyang is subject to extensive international sanctions for the programs.

    South Korea's nuclear envoy Lee Do-hoon met with US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Southeast Asian security forum in Bangkok. The two exchanged views on the missile test and pledged to make diplomatic efforts to restart the working level earlier in the denuclearization talks, the South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement.

    The US does not plan to make changes to upcoming military exercises with South Korea, a senior US defense official said Wednesday, despite a recent series of North Korean missile launches intended to pressure Seoul and Washington to stop joint training. { Source }
