Officially Joining United, Maguire Breaks Van Dijk's Record

Manchester United officially signed Leicester City center-back Harry Maguire on Monday (5/8/2019). Maguire was contracted for six years with a value of 80 million pounds (Rp1, 39 trillion).

United did not explain the value of the transfer, but British media reported Maguire to be the most expensive defender in the world, surpassing the 75 million pounds paid by Liverpool to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January last year.

"Manchester United is happy to confirm the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City. Harry signed a six-year contract, with an option to extend for another year," United said in a statement on their website (https://www.manutd.com/en/ news / details / harry-maguire-confirmed-as-man-utd-third-summer-signing? t = y & utm_source = twitter & utm_medium = image_post & utm_campaign = muwebsite & utm_content = 19080hmsigning).

The 26-year-old became the Red Devils' second most expensive recruit after French midfielder Paul Pogba, who signed with a world record of 89 million pounds (Rp1.5 trillion) from Juventus in 2016.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Maguire as one of the best central defenders. "He is great at reading the game and his presence is strong on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure. Plus his calmness when handling the ball and his great skills in both boxes," said the Norwegian coach.

"I can see he will fit in with this team both on and off the pitch. He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club."

Maguire, who helped England reach the 2018 World Cup semifinals, has signed a contract extension until 2023 with Leicester last year and played 31 times in the league last season, scoring three goals.

"I am delighted to have signed a contract for this great club. I really enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons," Maguire said.

"However, when Manchester United came knocking, it was an extraordinary opportunity."

"From my conversation with the manager, I am pleased with the vision and plans he has for the team. It is clear to see that Ole built a team to win the trophy. I am now hoping to meet my new teammates and get the season started."
